FOREIGN LANGUAGES

ENGLISH

1st grade

English education in 1st grade is 12 hours per week. The Main Course takes 8 hours, and the remaining 4 hours consist of 2 hours of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and 2 hours of Phonics. Our courses are taught in a way that keeps the students active, i.e. with interactive and student-centered methods. We choose our textbooks with this aim in mind.

Our English lessons are mainly focused on vocabulary studies throughout the year. The vocabulary studies are supported by stories and songs. Our students tell the stories they have learned and they reenact them. This plays an important role in their speaking skills and in getting the correct pronunciation.

In addition, the alphabet is introduced in this semester with Phonics lessons. Each letter and sound is meticulously studied. Our learning outcomes are realised with Alphabet books and Phonics books prepared by our expert academic staff. These studies are carried out by foreign teachers.

In CLIL courses, our students can take different branch lessons (mathematics, science, social sciences etc.) in English. In CLIL lessons, our CLIL book, which is also prepared by our expert academic staff, is used so that our lessons can be supported with fun experiments as well as speaking and listening activities, in order to help students have a modern experience where they learn different branch lessons and their terminologies in a foreign language, which allows for interdisciplinary interaction and consolidates learning.

In our lessons, smartboard activities, posters, game cards, flashcards, stickers and all sorts of objects related to the subject are employed.

Aside from our textbooks and smart board activities, we also support students' English studies at home via online platforms. There are hundreds of books, videos and exercises in these platforms.  Our students can log in to this platform with their own individual passwords to read books and watch videos outside of school.  In addition, the February holiday and summer holiday assignments are given through this platform.

At the beginning of each unit, the previous unit is revised and learning with different games is definitely reinforced.  Apart from these clubs, we welcome summer with "English Summer Fest", which we organise each year in the first days of summer. In this activity held in the school, our students play English games in the stations installed in the garden for half a day and support their language development and have a very enjoyable time.

We aim to conduct our students' language training in the most enjoyable and motivating way and we organise out-of-class activities such as 'Cinema Day, Buzzy Words, and English Summer Fest'  In addition, we always strive to communicate and cooperate with our parents regarding the language development goals of our students.

2nd grade

2nd Grade lessons are divided into 8 hours of Main Course and 4 hours of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning). After learning the subjects, we consolidate our lessons by extensive revision as well as reading, reenacting and listening to the stories of our smart-board-compatible books.  It allows us to both consolidate the subjects learned in class and help our students love English. We also reinforce our grammar subjects with various exercises in the book or worksheets prepared by our teachers.

Our studies focus more on vocabulary in the first stage. Afterwards, we slowly move on to the method we call "inductive learning", whereby our students learn various examples by listening and observing, which helps them discover grammatical structures on their own. This helps them consolidate what they have learned so far. In other words, they learn English as a native language.

Our students are actively involved during English lessons. Our courses are not teacher-centered, but student-centered.

CLIL lessons, which is a contemporary foreign language learning approach, are taught 4 hours a week. Our CLIL book is used in other branch lessons such as Social Sciences, Science and Mathematics so that our lessons can be supported with fun experiments as well as speaking and listening activities, in order to help students have a modern experience where they learn different branch lessons and their terminologies in a foreign language, which allows for interdisciplinary interaction and consolidates learning.

During the planning of the English education process at Şahinkaya, individual needs and international criteria are taken into consideration when choosing the lesson plans and textbooks. Our education program is based on the Common European Framework (CEF), and a portion of it consists of preparation for the Cambridge language exams.  Some of our work is carried out by using our GET for Starters books, which are written by our expert academic staff.  We support the learning process with our practice exams and worksheets. We carry out exercises appropriate to the level of Starters in order to improve speaking and listening skills. These exercises are included in the curriculum and supported by extra courses. Our 2nd grade students enter the Starters exam earlier than most schools. With the certificate they acquire within this context, they are able to prove their level of English not only at the school level or at the national level but also at international level. Throughout these studies, different areas such as reading, writing, listening and speaking are supported in order to help them comprehend the language in all aspects.

At the beginning of each week, we conduct a mini-assessment about what they learned in the previous week. Our aim is to help students fully understand a subject before moving on to another one.

We also offer weekly study lessons to our incoming students. In these lessons, students who have deficiencies in certain subjects can complete these deficiencies or consolidate what they have learned in class that week.

The main objective of our English lessons is to instil a love of the English language and help students see English not merely as a lesson to be learned but as a means of communication.  We always strive to communicate and cooperate with our parents in order to fulfill our objectives.

During the 4-hour CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) lessons, students use a different textbook and different subjects (mathematics, science, social studies etc…) are taught in English, which are supported by activities in reading, interpretation, and drama.

During the planning of the English education process at Şahinkaya, individual needs and international criteria are taken into consideration when choosing the lesson plans and textbooks.

In 4th grade, the English lessons are taught 12 hours a week.  Our lessons are divided into 8 hours of Main Course and 4 hours of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) in order to use 12 hours more efficiently and to involve different disciplines.

For 8 hours of Main Course per week, a student's book that will cover the whole year and a workbook that will consolidate the lesson are selected. In addition, our GET for Flyers textbook is used in preparation for the Cambridge exam, which is written by our expert academic staff. We support the learning process with our practice exams and worksheets. We carry out exercises appropriate to Flyers level so as to improve students' speaking and listening skills.
CLIL lessons, which is a contemporary foreign language learning approach, are taught 4 hours a week. Our main source is our textbook aiming to teach English by including different branches such as Social Sciences, Science and Mathematics. We measure and assess the progress of our students through one week of Quick Check (reading and comprehension) exam and another week of Spell Check exam (listening and writing). As these evaluations are carried out at the beginning of each week, we immediately detect the deficiencies of our children and focus on their wrong and correct answers.  It helps us complete their deficiencies more easily. Aside from the Quick Check and Spell Check exams, two written exams and a Mock Exam (Trial Exam) are held each semester.  With these exams, we measure the four skills of our children (speaking, writing, reading comprehension, listening). In order to measure their speaking skills, our children are evaluated individually by their teachers.
Apart from the written examinations, we carry out weekly writing activities both in the classroom and by giving homework. We aim to help them gain effective and regular writing habits by giving feedback to our students in their writings.

Every Friday, our students are given a weekly schedule by their class teachers. This detailed schedule shows what is going to be done in each lesson as well as the daily homework In addition, our parents receive a weekly "English Lesson Learning Outcomes Parent Information Letter", which includes subjects covered in the Main Course and CLIL lessons, assigned homework, online resources to be utilised and subjects to be covered in the following week. Thanks to these parent information letters, it is possible for parents to monitor the subjects that have been covered as well those that are going to be covered.
In the second semester, apart from the intensive English programs, there are club activities. Some of our students choose ''Speaking Club'' and some ''CATS'' musical club. In Speaking Club, exercises, dialogue activities and roleplays are carried out in order to improve our children's speaking skills. Students who choose the CATS musical club also stage the famous Broadway classic CATS musical at the end of the year.
